Spanning from the molecular to the whole-organism level, research in my laboratory is focused on the energy acquisition strategies of organisms.  In short, I am interested in how organisms make a living and the consequences of different energy acquisition strategies for ecosystem fluxes.  I largely work in the marine environment, but my students also work in terrestrial systems.

October 2018: Welcome to Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. Silvia Hinojosa! Dr. Hinojosa is studying the evolution of proteolytic enzyme genes in vertebrates, but especially in those that have and don't have a stomach! That's right! Did you know that nearly 25% of all fish species don't have an acidic stomach? This likely has large implications on protein digestion, so we want to tease that apart. Dr. Beck Wehrle, Samantha Leigh, and Dr. German presented at the American Physiological Society meeting in New Orleans, LA. Happy Halloween! Postdoctoral scholar Dr. Joseph Heras got our huge physiological genomics dataset out at BioRxiv:

September 2018: Is there a doctor in the house? Yes there is! Dr. Beck Wehrle successfully defended his dissertation. Congrats to the first PhD awarded from the German Lab! Samantha Leigh's paper on seagrass digestion in bonnethead sharks is now out in Proceedings of the Royal Society B. See the publications page. It was also covered by The Guardian and a host of other news outlets. Alyssa Frederick's JFB paper on egg cannibalism in grunion is now available on the publications page, too. Karina Brocco French begins as a PhD student in the lab. Welcome to UCI, Karina! September was a busy month in the lab!

August 2018: Congrats to Samantha Leigh on getting her first dissertation chapter accepted for publication at Proceedings of the Royal Society B! Once it is available online, it will be on our publications page. Congrats to Alyssa Frederick on starting the NSF-funded Graduate Research Internship Program with NOAA in Monterey, CA! Congrats to Michelle Herrera as she begins her term as the UCI Associated Graduate Students President!

June 2018: Congrats to Alyssa Frederick on winning the Grover Stephens Memorial Fellowship! And, Samantha Leigh won the William F. Holcomb Scholarship! We also had a paper accepted in the Journal of Fish Biology confirming egg canabalism in the California grunion, Leuresthes tenuis. Alyssa Frederick is a co-first author on the paper, which was a collaboration between researchers at UCI, Cal State Fullerton, and UC Santa Cruz.

May 2018: Congrats to Alyssa Frederick on winning a Graduate Dean Dissertation Fellowship for Fall 2018! And, Samantha Leigh won best overall presentation at the Winter Ecology & Evolutionary Biology Graduate Student Symposium!

March 2018: I am excited to report that Karina Brocco French (currently an ORISE Fellow at the EPA) will be joining the lab as a new PhD student in the fall! Welcome, Karina! I am also up to my eyeballs in manuscripts from lab members at the moment. Good problem to have, but please excuse me if I am slow to reply.

These are the recent news stories.  Check out the "People" page for links to each person's personal page, which will have more individual news.

We are always recruiting graduate students. Please contact Dr. German if you are interested in pursuing your PhD in Nutritional Ecology and/or Marine Biology at UCI.
